Canberra Cavalry Re-Sign Brian Burgamy

Burgamy, 31, dominated almost every batting statistic in his inaugural ABL season and set a new league record batting average of .409.

He also led the league in runs scored (41), hits (67), total bases (111) and walks (34), and was third in home runs (12) and fifth in runs batted in (34).

It means the Cavalry now has their two offensive stars from the 2011-12 campaign back at the plate again, with Kody Hightower already in Canberra preparing for the upcoming season.

The Cavs have been in constant contact with Burgamy since he returned to the USA, with negotiations ramping up about six weeks ago.

Cavalry general manager Thom Carter said Burgamy's return also helped build continuity for the fledgling club, instead of just having minor league players fly-in from the USA for one season.

"Brian Burgamy is a huge boost to anybody's offence," he told The Canberra Times. "The guy set records here last year for batting average and led the league in just about every offensive category and is a clutch hitter.

"He's just going to increase our [offensive] output, along with other players we've signed and brought across.
"We think we're going to have one heck of an offence this year."

Burgamy and Hightower aren't the only Cavalry players returning from last season.

Canberra products Hayden Beard, Steven Kent, Kyle Perkins and Ben Warner are also on the roster, while pitcher Brian Grening will be the No.1 starting pitcher.

Bryan Corey Has Pitched In His Last Professional Baseball Game...

And in typical Riversharks fashion, he did great, then the bullpen came in and shit all over him. 'Sharks lose 6-3, Corey goes six and a third, giving up a run on just two hits. He struck out two.

Santos Hernandez struck out FIVE Revs in his inning and two thirds of relief, but his efforts were offset by John "Hey, Didn't I Used To Be The Closer?" Lujan, who allowed three runs on four hits in his two thirds of an inning of relief.  Jake Eigsti went three for four with two RBI. Chris Walker launched his 12th home run of the year over the left field wall.

Fox Shocks York Jocks; Or How Doetsch's Reach Sparks 'Sharks

In his first start with the Riversharks, righty Steve Fox was impressive. Impressive in that he made it six innings without going on the DL, which is apparently de rigueur with Camden's pitching staff in 2012.

Eddy Camacho, Keith Weiser and Mariano Gomez have all been shelved with injuries, which has required some serious shuffling of the deck on the part of Jeff Scott to even put together a five man rotation (Blake King and Josh Walter, usually middle relievers, have started games in the past two weeks). The Alex Smith experiment isn't working quite as planned, but if tonight's game against the York Revolution was any indication, Fox is going to do quite nicely here. He went six innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out three.

Meantime, Steve Doetsch had himself a game, going two for three with a homer and two RBI, as the Riversharks came from behind to beat the Revs tonight, 5-2. Hammes, Lujan and Rosales combined for three innings of scoreless relief, with Rosales picking up save number five.

King Rocks, 'Sharks Roll

(Camden, N.J. – September 9, 2012) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (26-28, 57-67), fell against the Camden Riversharks (24-31, 58-66) at Campbell’s Field on Sunday by a score of 5-4. Bridgeport is 10-8 against Camden this season and trails Southern Maryland by five games in the Liberty Division standings.

Bridgeport scored one run in the fifth inning, two more in the sixth frame, and one in the eighth inning. Luis Figueroa drove in two runs in successive innings on singles and reached base twice. James Simmons hit a solo homer to rightcenter in the eighth, scored three times on the day while reaching base three times. It was the outfielders’ thirteenth homer of the season. Joey Gathright earned a two hit day and Brad Boyer reached base twice on a single and a walk. Eddie Rogers contributed the only other single on Sunday. Willis Otanez’ fourteen game on-base streak came to an end with an 0-4 performance at the plate.

Camden pushed across four runs in the third inning and one more in the seventh. Reid Gorecki, Chris Walker, Brian Burgamy, and Alvin Colina drove in the runs for the winning side. Gorecki score twice on Sunday.

Bluefish starter, Paul Oseguera (10-6), suffered the loss as the southpaw surrendered five runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while fanning seven in seven innings. Kyle Zaleski struck out one batter in a scoreless eighth.

Riversharks starter, Blake King (3-5), earned the victory as the righthanded hurler completed five innings of one run, five hit, two walk, and one strikeout baseball. Four relievers entered and finished the game; Leo Rosales retired the Bluefish batters in order, in the ninth, and notched his fourth save of the year. The bullpen combined for four frames and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two.
