Canberra Cavalry Re-Sign Brian Burgamy

Burgamy, 31, dominated almost every batting statistic in his inaugural ABL season and set a new league record batting average of .409.

He also led the league in runs scored (41), hits (67), total bases (111) and walks (34), and was third in home runs (12) and fifth in runs batted in (34).

It means the Cavalry now has their two offensive stars from the 2011-12 campaign back at the plate again, with Kody Hightower already in Canberra preparing for the upcoming season.

The Cavs have been in constant contact with Burgamy since he returned to the USA, with negotiations ramping up about six weeks ago.

Cavalry general manager Thom Carter said Burgamy's return also helped build continuity for the fledgling club, instead of just having minor league players fly-in from the USA for one season.

"Brian Burgamy is a huge boost to anybody's offence," he told The Canberra Times. "The guy set records here last year for batting average and led the league in just about every offensive category and is a clutch hitter.

"He's just going to increase our [offensive] output, along with other players we've signed and brought across.
"We think we're going to have one heck of an offence this year."

Burgamy and Hightower aren't the only Cavalry players returning from last season.

Canberra products Hayden Beard, Steven Kent, Kyle Perkins and Ben Warner are also on the roster, while pitcher Brian Grening will be the No.1 starting pitcher.

Bryan Corey Has Pitched In His Last Professional Baseball Game...

And in typical Riversharks fashion, he did great, then the bullpen came in and shit all over him. 'Sharks lose 6-3, Corey goes six and a third, giving up a run on just two hits. He struck out two.

Santos Hernandez struck out FIVE Revs in his inning and two thirds of relief, but his efforts were offset by John "Hey, Didn't I Used To Be The Closer?" Lujan, who allowed three runs on four hits in his two thirds of an inning of relief.  Jake Eigsti went three for four with two RBI. Chris Walker launched his 12th home run of the year over the left field wall.

Fox Shocks York Jocks; Or How Doetsch's Reach Sparks 'Sharks

In his first start with the Riversharks, righty Steve Fox was impressive. Impressive in that he made it six innings without going on the DL, which is apparently de rigueur with Camden's pitching staff in 2012.

Eddy Camacho, Keith Weiser and Mariano Gomez have all been shelved with injuries, which has required some serious shuffling of the deck on the part of Jeff Scott to even put together a five man rotation (Blake King and Josh Walter, usually middle relievers, have started games in the past two weeks). The Alex Smith experiment isn't working quite as planned, but if tonight's game against the York Revolution was any indication, Fox is going to do quite nicely here. He went six innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out three.

Meantime, Steve Doetsch had himself a game, going two for three with a homer and two RBI, as the Riversharks came from behind to beat the Revs tonight, 5-2. Hammes, Lujan and Rosales combined for three innings of scoreless relief, with Rosales picking up save number five.

More on Steve Fox (drafted by...you guessed it, the Red Sox) here.

King Rocks, 'Sharks Roll

(Camden, N.J. – September 9, 2012) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (26-28, 57-67), fell against the Camden Riversharks (24-31, 58-66) at Campbell’s Field on Sunday by a score of 5-4. Bridgeport is 10-8 against Camden this season and trails Southern Maryland by five games in the Liberty Division standings.

Bridgeport scored one run in the fifth inning, two more in the sixth frame, and one in the eighth inning. Luis Figueroa drove in two runs in successive innings on singles and reached base twice. James Simmons hit a solo homer to rightcenter in the eighth, scored three times on the day while reaching base three times. It was the outfielders’ thirteenth homer of the season. Joey Gathright earned a two hit day and Brad Boyer reached base twice on a single and a walk. Eddie Rogers contributed the only other single on Sunday. Willis Otanez’ fourteen game on-base streak came to an end with an 0-4 performance at the plate.

Camden pushed across four runs in the third inning and one more in the seventh. Reid Gorecki, Chris Walker, Brian Burgamy, and Alvin Colina drove in the runs for the winning side. Gorecki score twice on Sunday.

Bluefish starter, Paul Oseguera (10-6), suffered the loss as the southpaw surrendered five runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while fanning seven in seven innings. Kyle Zaleski struck out one batter in a scoreless eighth.

Riversharks starter, Blake King (3-5), earned the victory as the righthanded hurler completed five innings of one run, five hit, two walk, and one strikeout baseball. Four relievers entered and finished the game; Leo Rosales retired the Bluefish batters in order, in the ninth, and notched his fourth save of the year. The bullpen combined for four frames and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two.

Q: Who The Hell Is That Guy Wearing Sean Jarrett's #13 Jersey THIS WEEK?? A: It's Alex Smith.

In Which Southern Maryland Makes Me Think All Those John Waters Movies Were Actually Documentaries...

With the Atlantic League season almost at an end, and our beloved Riversharks languishing in the sub-basement of the Liberty Division (still 6.5 games up on the woeful Long Island Ducks, who were, you'll remember, you first half Liberty Division winners) I've stopped paying so much attention to standings and recaps and stats, and started enjoying the more...esoteric details of this team and the game they play.

Earlier this week, I traveled to Waldorf, Maryland to see our boys take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in what was thought to be a crucial four game series. If the 'Sharks could win 3 of 4, or maybe sweep, they'd make up some serious ground on the first place 'Crabs, and at least make September interesting.

They didn't win.

Well, they one one game. On Thursday.

Kevin Reese pitched an absolute gem. He threw seven and two-thirds innings, giving up one run on four measly hits. He struck out seven. And, miracle of miracles, the bullpen held up it's end, one-hitting the 'Crabs the rest of the way. 'Sharks win in 10 innings 3-1.

But the victory wasn't the best part of Thursday night, for me. The best part of Thursday night was watching Alvin Colina play the role of World's Greatest Wingman for the 'Sharks clubby.

The 'Crabs have a few female 'street teamers' that help with the on field promotions between innings. Two of these girls, a blonde and brunette, made their way down to the railing beside the visitors dugout, apparently to hassle the batboy.

Alvin was in the hole, and caught the brunette's attention. Hey, are you single? There's a guy that works with us, and he'd like to get to know you. Why don't you come down after the game? C'mon, he's a good guy!

Now, I'm secure enough in my masculinity to admit: Alvin Colina is a handsome, well built, professional athlete. Made it to the Show. Talks a good game.

So these girls had no chance.

After some hemming and hawing on their part, I do believe the deal, as they say, was sealed. Or at least numbers exchanged. I also believe clubby owes him a beer, cause that might have been the greatest case of wingmanitude I've ever personally witnessed.

GORECKI, YOUNG FORGET THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL

Look, I don't know the specifics of the trade that brought former Long Island Ducks OF Reid Gorecki over to Camden, but I do know this: he ain't too happy about being here. Check his tweet from yesterday:

Clearly something's amiss. Either he said something he shouldn't have to the wrong person, or someone in the Ducks organization had it in for him. Or who knows what.

But his gripe turns quickly to sour grapes, as evidenced in his tweet earlier today:

Ahh, Reid, in the words of Ed Lover, "C'mon, Son!!" There's no crying! There's no crying in baseball!!

So, Gorecki and Young have apparently not endeared themselves to everyone in the clubhouse. Good thing the season's almost over, they've got a lot of down time coming to sulk.

Just Got Back From Waldorf, Updates To Follow.

'Sharks Rally Comes Up Just Short

CAMDEN, New Jersey – Seven solid innings from Jason Lane and 17 hits from the offense salvaged game three of the series with an 8-6 win over the Riversharks Sunday afternoon at Campbell’s Field. With the win, the Skeeters finished the regular-season series against the Riversharks (13-7).

Sugar Land started the scoring first in the top of the second after three straight singles started the inning from Dionys Cesar, Matt Hagen and Ofilio Castro. Bubba Bell drove two runs in with the bases loaded with a double down the right-field line to give the Skeeters a 2-0 lead. One batter later, Iggy Suarez plated one more with an RBI single, 3-0.

Starter Bryan Corey (8-9) struggled in the top of the third when the righty again loaded the bases for the Skeeters with two singles from Dominic Ramos and Cesar and a walk to Hagen. Ofilio Castro came through this time with a sac-fly into left to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Skeeters scored more in the top of the fourth off Corey before he was yanked two batters into the inning. Suarez led off with a single into left and Steve Moss brought him in with a RBI double down the left-field line, 5-0.

Blake King replaced Corey in the fourth to finish out the inning. Moss moved to third on Josh Pressley’s second single of the game, and scored the sixth run of the game when Pressley was caught off first on a wild-pitch. Moss trotted home after the ball was dropped from tagging Pressley, 6-0. Ramos walked one batter later and stole second, but after tagging on a fly ball into right to get to third, he scored on a RBI single from Cesar to make it 7-0.

For the fourth straight inning, the Skeeters scored at least one run with another off King in the fifth. Castro walked and moved to second on a groundout from Bell before scoring on a Suarez double into right-center field, 8-0. Spencer Steedley replaced King after an inning and a third to record the final two outs of the fifth.

Jason Lane (7-4) was near perfect through six innings before Camden scored their first runs of the game off him in the bottom of the seventh. Through the first six innings, Lane had not faced more than four batters in an inning and had retired the side in order three times. Lane hit Pedro Feliz on a 3-2 count in the arm in the leadoff spot before Eduardo Perez singled into right to put two on base. After striking out Raul Padron and getting Alvin Colina to fly out into right, Lloyd Turner brought both runners in with a RBI double into left-center field, 8-2.

Pedro Liriano replaced Lane in the eighth after the lefty worked seven innings giving up two runs on four hits while striking out six. Liriano retired the side in order in the eighth with the help from a 4-6-3 double play after walking a batter in the three he faced.

Dustin Richardson came in to pitch the ninth, but struggled to record an out walking three batters in a row to load the bases. Gary Majewski replaced him but gave up a single to Alvin Colina that scored one run, 8-3. Majewski hit Turner in the next at-bat, 8-4, but got Steve Doetsch to groundout into a 5-2-3 double play with the bases loaded to put two outs on the board.

Reid Gorecki picked up his first base-hit as a Shark with two RBIs attached with runners on second and third to cut the Skeeters lead down to two, 8-6, but Brian Burgamy finished the game as the ninth batter of the inning when Majewski struck him out looking to seal the win.

'Sharks Close Out August On A Roll

CAMDEN, NJ – The month of August had been one to forget for Camden. They finished a nine-game home stand three-and-six and dropped the opener in Long Island in blow out fashion.

But the Riversharks have stormed back to win four games in the final four days of August, ending the month on a positive note. They finished it with a 4-2 comeback win over the Sugar Land Skeeters Friday night in the first of a three-game series at Campbell’s Field.

Two solo home runs put Sugar Land ahead early, but Danny Santiesteban provided three RBI and Pedro Feliz lined one in as well to give the Riversharks the win. All four runs came in the sixth and seventh innings.

'Sharks Look Better In Makeup Than Revs

Brandon Haveman tied the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Camden Riversharks had the last laugh with a 5-4 win in 12 innings over the York Revolution in front of 4,152 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Thursday evening, thanks to a two-out single in the top of the 12th by Pedro Feliz.

York spent most of its night battling back after Camden scored three unearned runs in the fourth on a Steve Doetsch opposite field home run to right-center, putting the Revs in a 4-1 hole.

After squandering a first-and-third, no-out opportunity in their half of the fourth, the Revs did plate runs in the fifth on an RBI single off the Arch Nemesis by Liu Rodriguez, and in the sixth on a Michael Hernandez sacrifice fly to center.

Down a run in the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Travis Scott singled up the middle with one out, extending his hitting streak to seven consecutive games.  He then moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored the game-tying run on Haveman’s two-out single up the middle.

Revs starter Ryan Feierabend lasted 7.1 innings, allowing Camden’s first four runs, but only one of which was earned.  The lefty allowed nothing after the Doetsch home run, and York’s bullpen retired the first 11 batters it faced before Doetsch singled with one out in the 12th.  After the base hit, Doetsch stole second, and scored the decisive run on Feliz’ two-out single against reliever Ricardo Gomez (4-1).

York managed only one hit as a team in extra innings, as Camden’s bullpen rebounded after closer John Lujan allowed the tying run in the ninth.  Former Revs lefty James Houser (3-0) picked up the win with a perfect 11th.

Camden scored a first inning run on a two-out RBI double off the Arch Nemesis by Eduardo Perez.
York tied the game at 1-1 in the third when Rodriguez singled to right field with the bases loaded, but the Revs were denied the lead when Joe Thurston lined back to the mound for an inning-ending double play.

Pluck-A-Couple-Ducks

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 29, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Camden Riversharks 5-3 on Wednesday night in the final game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Camden took an early 2-0 lead in the first against Ducks starter Bobby Blevins on a sac fly to right by Brian Burgamy and a RBI single to right by Eduardo Perez. The Ducks grabbed a run in the second on Shawn Williams’ RBI groundout off Riversharks starter Eddy Camacho to cut the deficit to one.

Long Island then jumped in front 3-2 in the fourth on Josh Johnson’s two-out two-run single to right with the bases loaded. It stayed that way until the ninth when the ‘Sharks scored three to take a 5-3 lead. Burgamy’s RBI double, a sac fly by Raul Padron and a run-scoring single from Perez did the damage.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Blevins tossed five innings, yielding two runs on five hits with four strikeouts, and Camacho pitched six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out four. James Houser (2-0) got the win after tossing a scoreless eighth inning, and Armando Benitez (2-1) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits in the ninth. Leo Rosales earned his second save with a scoreless ninth.

'Sharks Acquire Reid Gorecki For PTBNL

The Camden Riversharks have acquired outfielder Reid Gorecki from the Long Island Ducks for a player to be named later.

Gorecki was drafted in the 13th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals and started as a rookie in the Low-A New York-Penn League. He also spent time in High-A Palm Beach, Double-A Springfield, and Triple-A Memphis before being called up to MLB as a 40-man roster addition.

In 2008, he was released from the Cardinals organization due to injuries. On May 10, 2008, he was signed by the Atlanta Braves as a minor league free agent, and assigned to the Mississippi Braves of the Double-A Southern League. Gorecki re-signed with the Braves after the 2008 season.

On August 17, 2009, the Braves called him up to the majors. On August 19, 2009, Gorecki recorded his first major league hit and RBI against his hometown team, the New York Mets.

Gorecki was granted free agency at the end of the 2009 season. On January 11, 2010, Gorecki signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees with an invite to spring training. Gorecki became a free agent after the 2010 season ended. In 85 games with the Ducks this season, Gorecki is batting .281, with 10 HR and 41 RBI.

Q: Who The Hell Is That Guy Wearing Joe D'Allessandro's #14 Jersey?? A: It's Bryan Goelz

Goelz was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 36th round of the 2002 MLB June Amateur Draft from New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn, NY.

He last played for the Somerset Patriots in 2007. Was a teammate of second baseman Delwyn Young's on the South Georgia Waves in 2003.

Pluck-A-Duck

(Central Islip, N.Y. Aug. 28, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Camden Riversharks 10-5 on Tuesday night in the second game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Riversharks starter Bryan Corey on a two-run single by Dan Lyons and a double steal that scored Mitch Canham from third. Camden responded with a six-run third inning against Ducks starter Chris McCoy to take a 6-3 lead. Chris Walker’s two-run homer and Danny Santiesteban’s two-run single highlighted the frame.

A four-run fourth for the Riversharks put the game out of reach, with a RBI single by Brian Burgamy, a run-scoring double by Raul Padron and another two-run single by Santiesteban doing the damage. Brandon Sing’s RBI groundout in the seventh and Joash Brodin’s solo homer in the ninth cut the lead to five, but it wasn’t enough.

Corey (8-8) got the win, tossing five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out two. McCoy (2-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs on six hits in two and one-third innings.

'Crabs Rally, Beat 'Sharks 5-4

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (25-18, 55-58) closed out another series win as they defeated the Camden Riversharks (17-25, 51-60) Sunday afternoon by a score of 5-4.

Going into the seventh inning, the game was tied 3-3 until Brian Barton knocked in the go ahead runs. Kevin Rios got things going in the seventh with a single, and was followed with a Jeremy Owens walk and Mike Daniel single. With the bases loaded, Barton reached on a fielders choice, which turned into an error by second baseman Delwyn Young. Kevin Rios scored on the hit and Young’s error allowed Owens to score, making the score 5-3.

The Riversharks added another run in the eighth but fell short in their rally.

Blue Crabs starter Daryl Thompson turned in another good outing as he pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out 5, walking 2 and only allowing 2 runs.

Jim Ed Warden improved his record to 6-7 on the season, receiving the win. Through 2/3 of an inning, Warden struck out 1, walked 1 and allowed 1 one. Chris Mobley added his sixth save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning, striking out 1 and walking none.

Riversharks starter Mike McGuire (6-9) was charged with the loss for Camden. Over 6 2/3 innings, McGuire gave up five runs off of 7 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 1 batter.
